General Approach

  • System: Goren-based, mostly natural.
  • Majors: Open the best suit, even with only 4 cards.
  • 2-Bids: All 2-over-1 bids (2♦, 2♥, 2♠) are strong and natural.
  • Philosophy: Prioritize natural bids over complex conventions.

Notrump Openings

1NT Opening: 15-17 HCP (Balanced)

  • 2♣: Stayman convention, asks for a 4-card major.
  • 2♦ / 2♥ / 2♠: Natural and non-forcing. Shows a 5+ card suit and invites partner to pass.
  • 2NT: Invitational, showing 8-9 HCP.
  • 3NT: To play, showing 10-14 HCP.
Note: Jacoby Transfers are NOT used in this system. Responses are natural.

2NT Opening: 20-21 HCP (Balanced)

  • 3♣: Stayman convention.
  • 3NT: To play.

Major Suit Openings (1♥ and 1♠)

Opening promises 4+ cards and 12+ total points.

  • Single Raise: (e.g., 1♠ → 2♠) Shows 6-9 points and 3+ card support.
  • Jump Raise: (e.g., 1♠ → 3♠) Shows 10-12 points and 4+ card support. Invitational.
  • 1NT Response: Shows 6-9 points without a fit. **This bid is NOT forcing.**
  • New Suit: (e.g., 1♥ → 1♠) Shows 6+ points and a 4+ card suit. Forcing for one round.

Other Opening Bids

Minor Suit Openings (1♣ and 1♦)

Promises a 3+ card suit. With 4-4 in the minors, open 1♦. With 3-3, open 1♣.

Strong Bids

  • 2♣ Opening: Artificial. The only purely artificial bid. Shows 22+ points.
  • 2♦ / 2♥ / 2♠: **Strong and Natural.** Shows a good 5+ card suit and ~17-21 points.
Critical Agreement: Unlike SAYC, 2-level suit openings are strong, not weak preempts.

Weak Bids (Preempts)

Opening bids at the 3-level (3♣, 3♦, 3♥, 3♠) are preemptive, showing a long suit (typically 7 cards) and a weak hand.
